Burmester 088
Preamplifier
The Burmester 088 preamplifier is simple and intuitively operated for a relaxed listening experience.
Following the long-established Burmester tradition, it perfectly melds high-quality sound with attractive visual experience.
The Burmester 088 preamplifier perfectly melds high-quality sound with attractive visual appearance.
Its operation is simple and intuitive and guarantees a relaxed listening experience.
As a member of the Burmester preamplifier family, it profits greatly from technological and engineering advances that mark, for example, the performance of the Reference Line preamp 077.
Among them are the proven dual-mono design for optimal channel separation, resonance-damping carbon fibre suspension for best insulation from mechanical interferences and DC-coupled signal paths without distorting capacitors for precise bass reproduction.
Design
Two large rotary dials for input selection and volume control dominate the classic chrome front panel of the 088 preamplifier.
Different operating modes may be selected using chromed toggle switches on the front panel.
The engraved Burmester signature and the model moniker above the power switch, which can be used to switch the 088 on, off or into standby mode, round out the visuals.
The rear panel offers the full range of possible connections.
Handmade
The exquisite chrome front panel, typical for Burmester’s Top Line components, is manufactured in a complex process by carefully chosen suppliers.
It immediately indicates the overall built quality relying on highest-quality parts.
Even the small screws for bolting the front panel to the housing are individually chrome-plated and checked for perfect quality.
Features
- Dual-mono design for maximum channel separation
- Completely DC-coupled without capacitors in the signal path
- 5 balanced inputs (XLR 3pol.), can be used as unbalanced inputs via adapter if required
- Seamless integration into home theatre systems using the surround thruput terminal
- D/A converter module (optional), with S/P-DIF input (cinch) and USB slave input, 069 DAC-technology with upsampling to 96kHz and 192kHz selectable
- Input sensitivity can be adjusted individually for every input from – 6dB to +12dB, therefore disruptive volume leaps when the inputs are changed are avoided
- Phase reversal of inputs for a flexible connection of devices with other devices with differing PIN-configuration of the XLR-plugs
- 1 balanced output with volume control (MAIN OUT), XLR 3pol.
- 1 balanced TAPE-Output, XLR 3pol., with fixed volume for analogue tape recordings
- Output amplification for MAIN OUT selectable between LOW and HIGH for the adjustment for connected power amps or active speakers
- Operating controls can be switched off on the device in order to prevent maloperation (child-proof lock)
- Volume balance is adjustable for customised acoustics
- Volume setting at activation can be programmed
- Volume control and volume indication in steps from 1-60 or dB-steps
- Brightness of display can be adjusted in four steps, display-off function
- Power controlling of other Burmester devices, Master/Slave via DC IN/OUT
- Vibration-isolating feet with carbon fibre clips for ideal resonance decoupling
- Fully DC-coupled without distorting capacitors in the signal path for a precise bass reproduction
- Dual-mono design for maximum channel separation
- Latest, wear-free Burmester CMOS technology for switching of inputs
- Latest CPU technology (ensures capability for future upgrades of controlling unit)

Ultimately, it was his demand for quality and his spirit of innovation that led to the formation of Burmester Audiosysteme GmbH in 1978.
Had Dieter Burmester not been so exacting and at the same time so creative, he would probably not have decided to design-engineer his own amplifier. Since he no longer considered using a hi-fi amplifier featuring tube technology, given relatively severe distortions, low damping factor compared with low-frequency membranes and rapid ageing, Burmester incorporated op-amp technology, modelled on modern measuring instruments, into his amp. Ultimately it was his high quality standards and spirit of innovation that led in 1978 to the establishment of Burmester Audiosysteme GmbH and which still form the basis of the company’s philosophy to this day. An unwillingness to compromise on the choice of components and the quality of workmanship combined with the principle of only launching a product if it represents a clear technical enhancement, compared with competitors’ products.
1980
The world’s first modular preamplifier
Dieter Burmester developed and produced the world’s first modular preamplifier. The legendary 808 is still produced today and in the meantime continues to show the way in the fifth evolutionary stage.
1983
The Phono Preamplifier
Dieter Burmester introduced symmetrical switching technology in the high-end segment with the 838 phono preamplifier.
1990
The stereo power amplifier 909
In 1990 the stereo power amplifier 909 is launched. It marked the foundation for all future generations of Burmester power amplifiers such as the 911, 956 and 036. The massive heat sink with its anodised silver ribs has become a characteristic design element for Burmester components across the globe.
1997
The Reference Line
The new product line completed the Burmester portfolio. The new Burmester Reference Line is now known for setting the standard in sound quality, innovation and processing quality in the high-end segment around the world. The naming of this extraordinary series was practically predetermined by the specialist magazines around the world: Reference – because all the products from this line are honoured with reference titles.
2005
Entering the automotive segment
Burmester is the first High-End sound manufacturer worldwide to be implemented in a luxury automobile. Bugatti, for whom Burmester developed an exclusive sound system over the course of three years, implemented the system in the model 16.4 Veyron.
2009
Porsche and Burmester
With a High-End surround sound system for the Porsche Panamera, Burmester set a new benchmark for automotive sound. Today, this award-winning system is available in all Porsche models.
2018
The Signature Line is complete
With the Burmester Signature Line, the company has made it possible for listeners to enter a new dimension of musical enjoyment. This product line, which perfectly combines with Burmester’s 175 turntable, is notorious for its many technological progressions and represents the zenith of sound reproduction quality.
