Sugden Sapphire DAP-800

Digital Analogue Preamplifier

Sugden DAP-800

With an extensive range of input options, the DAP-800 can be the control centre of your audio system. A total of six analogue inputs and six digital inputs are available as well as two single ended and one balanced output. The DAP-800 has been carefully designed to operate in two separate domains, analogue and digital. For each circuit Sugden use independent power supplies throughout so in effect there is a separate DAC and analogue pre-amp housed in a single chassis.

The pre amplifiers analogue stage incorporates a Sugden VCV circuit in its most advanced form. This circuit has a high impedance input section, current gain stage which drives a folded cascode stage into a Class A output stage. The folded cascode circuit facilitates a wide bandwidth with maximum dynamics and low capacitive connectivity. This delivers a sophisticated sound that is neutral and transparent.

The digital section of the DAP-800 incorporates the same unique digital to analogue conversion as their stand alone DAC-4. Sugden’s experience in designing digital products now stretches over twenty five years and they pride themselves on the analogue natural sound they have achieved. The DAP-800 has a number of advanced features.

To reduce jitter and control errors during play back there is a dedicated transceiver circuit, this re-formats data prior to the digital to analogue converter. A unique conversion method is employed without oversampling or filtering in the digital domain, instead Sugden chose an analogue filter resulting in very wide bandwidth capability. The interface accepts most digital formats including a ‘plug and play’ USB input for streaming music directly from a computer or dedicated music streamer.

1981 - 2023 Under Tony Miller in 1981, production was relocated to their current factory in Heckmondwike, a short distance from where it all began. For 40 years Tony was the managing director of Sugden Audio until his passing in 2021. Patrick Miller began working at Sugdens in 1982 under the guidance of his father Tony. He worked in all areas of the business from assembly and packing through to sales and subsequently to leading their small but dedicated team. Patrick, Tony and the talented Sugden team have made it the brand it is known as today, with approximately 100 products being released between this time. Patrick Miller, Managing Director of Sugden Audio passed away in September 2023 following a short illness. A21 Pure Class A The A21 was the worlds’ first production pure class A transistor amplifier and a great success. The partnership with Richard Allan was short lived and within a year the amplifier was renamed the SUGDEN A21. Shortly afterwards, manufacturing was moved to larger premises in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire Sugden A21 Present day Today they still manufacture in the same tradition with each Sugden product being handmade by a single highly skilled team member. Half of the team have been with the company for over thirty years enjoying a life-long career. Our involvement in the full manufacturing process still exists from design to despatch. We operate our own custom engineering shop , screen printing and assembly room. Sugden products are a truly handmade quality British product.
