Sugden Sapphire FBA-800

Stereo Power Amplifier

Sugden FBA-800

The FBA-800 is Sugden Audio’s most advanced power amplifier. The floating bridge design combines four 20 Watt amplifiers in a single stereo chassis and provides several key benefits. Each channel consists of two amplifiers working as voltage amplifiers driving an output stage of bridged power transistors. The advantages are a low noise floor, better power output relative to the voltage rails (x2) and with the fixed current of the class A mode, low output impedance and better load tolerance.

The Power amplifier is D.C. coupled, with a servo lock, ensuring excellent low frequency detail. For safety purposes the amplifier includes a D.C. protection circuit. This circuit is statically switched using extremely low impedance Mosfet switching devices. This circuit also soft switches the power amp on and off. The power supply is a low impedance design with a single custom made bi-filar wound transformer, with four separate windings. The main smoothing capacitors for the output stage are specially developed for professional audio applications with excellent ripple characteristics and long life. The Four power transistors per channel in the output stages are multi emitter devices with an output capability of 26 amps per device. The FBA-800 operates in the full balanced mode from the input of the unit to the output

Purist amplification for the connoisseur. The Sapphire series is the most satisfying and musical pre and power combination available from Sugden. This achievement follows a two year period of developing unique circuit designs and concepts. We have redesigned the building blocks of pure class A and through modern high quality components discovered its full potential. The same philosophy has been employed in our Sapphire DAP-800 pre-amplifier, resulting in the exciting development of the Sugden VCV circuit.

1981 - 2023 Under Tony Miller in 1981, production was relocated to their current factory in Heckmondwike, a short distance from where it all began. For 40 years Tony was the managing director of Sugden Audio until his passing in 2021. Patrick Miller began working at Sugdens in 1982 under the guidance of his father Tony. He worked in all areas of the business from assembly and packing through to sales and subsequently to leading their small but dedicated team. Patrick, Tony and the talented Sugden team have made it the brand it is known as today, with approximately 100 products being released between this time. Patrick Miller, Managing Director of Sugden Audio passed away in September 2023 following a short illness. A21 Pure Class A The A21 was the worlds’ first production pure class A transistor amplifier and a great success. The partnership with Richard Allan was short lived and within a year the amplifier was renamed the SUGDEN A21. Shortly afterwards, manufacturing was moved to larger premises in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire Sugden A21 Present day Today they still manufacture in the same tradition with each Sugden product being handmade by a single highly skilled team member. Half of the team have been with the company for over thirty years enjoying a life-long career. Our involvement in the full manufacturing process still exists from design to despatch. We operate our own custom engineering shop , screen printing and assembly room. Sugden products are a truly handmade quality British product.
