MF M5xi

Fully Discrete Power Amplifier – Son of TITAN

The biggest change, when compared to the old M5si predecessor, is that the M5xi now uses a completely new amplifier topology. It is now even closer to their legendary TITAN power amp design. The same topology that has been used in the M6si previously, and has now received a whole range of improvements in the M6xi, is now found at the core of the M5xi as well, only tuned for less output power.

The Musical Fidelity M5xi is configured as 2 independent monobloc power amps with a separate pre amp. It is, in fact, a pre amp with 2 monobloc power amps that just happen to share the same casework. It features technology trickled down from our legendary 1kW TITAN power amp.

Internally, refinements push performance even further. The main transformer and power supply PCB are now encapsulated within a metal enclosure, dramatically reducing electromagnetic interference inside the chassis. This improvement benefits every circuit in the amplifier, but especially the newly refined phono stage.

The upgraded MM/MC phono section features improved shielding and circuit optimisation, delivering lower noise, lower distortion, and greater vinyl transparency than ever before.

Even the powerhouse amplifier stage has been slightly enhanced. With improved components and increased output capability, the M5xi delivers even greater authority and control over demanding loudspeakers, than its predecessor, while preserving the effortless musicality that defines the Musical Fidelity
sound.

The result is an amplifier that combines classic Musical Fidelity high-end amplifier design with modern versatility. The M5xi delivers true high-end performance in the proud Musical Fidelity tradition and makes it more accessible than anything else in its class.

Technical Talk

The new Musical Fidelity M5xi represents the next evolution of high-end integrated amplification with advanced engineering drawn directly from their flagship designs. Built to deliver uncompromising sonic performance, the M5xi merges sophisticated circuitry and meticulous PCB layout with modern connectivity in a design that sets new standards for its class.

The M5xi is tuned for less power output than the M6xi, making it a better candidate for smaller rooms or shorter listening distances. However, you will struggle to find loudspeakers that the M5xi cannot properly and fully drive as the M5xi now commands the same power amplifier topology as the M6si and M6xi.

Power Amplifier

Configured as 2 independent monobloc power amps with a separate pre amp, at its core lies amplifier technology derived from Musical Fidelity’s prestigious TITAN power amplifier. This heritage ensures exceptional stability, authority, and musical control. The M5xi employs a low-distortion Darlington output stage arranged in the classic Musical Fidelity configuration. This design eliminates crossover artefacts while maintaining extremely low residual distortion, preserving musical detail and tonal accuracy across the entire frequency range.

Great attention has been given to the internal PCB layout. The carefully optimised board design minimises circuit imbalances that would otherwise require corrective feedback, allowing the amplifier to operate more naturally and transparently. During operation, all power supplies remain purely analogue, reducing high-frequency noise and minimising EMC-related interference. The result is a cleaner signal path and improved overall sonic purity.

Power delivery is another defining characteristic of the M5xi. With 160 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 240 watts into 4 ohms, the amplifier possesses immense current capability and extraordinary headroom. These extreme power reserves ensure accurate peak power delivery and a wide dynamic range, allowing the M5xi to drive demanding loudspeakers with complete authority while remaining composed during low-impedance dips.

Musical Fidelity

Preamplifier

At the heart of the M5xi lies a meticulously engineered fully analogue preamplifier stage designed for absolute signal integrity.

The preamplifier features a low-noise circuit design that maintains exceptional signal purity across the entire dynamic range. Whether at quiet listening levels or full-scale output, the M5xi preserves micro-detail and harmonic accuracy with remarkably low total harmonic distortion. The result is effortless clarity, stable imaging, and uncompromised musical realism.

Volume control is handled by a high-quality Burr-Brown stepped attenuator, offering significantly more precise channel matching than conventional potentiometer-based designs. The advantage is immediately audible: perfectly balanced stereo imaging, stable soundstage placement, and consistent tonal accuracy across all listening levels.

The M5xi embodies Musical Fidelity’s philosophy: combining uncompromising engineering with real-world usability making true high-end amplifier design as affordable as possible. The result is an integrated amplifier that delivers immense power, exceptional control, and remarkable transparency. Designed for music lovers who demand nothing less than true high-end performance.

Phono Stage

Vinyl playback receives equal attention with the new MM and MC phono stage. Compared to the M5si stage, this is a completely new development. Improved circuit design and layout, combined with enhanced isolation and shielding, significantly reduce noise and distortion. The result is a phono input capable of revealing the full warmth, depth, and dynamic nuance of high-quality vinyl recordings. Vinyl enthusiasts will greatly welcome the addition of a MC stage, as the old M5si only featured a MM phono stage.

The position of the transformer and power supply PCB have been carefully tuned, rearranged and encapsulated in a metal enclosure to decrease electromagnetical interference towards all parts of the amplifier. The phono stage circuitry benefits greatly as it works with high amplification factors up to 1.000. It is absolutely crucial to shield high gain amplifier stages from any and all external interference.

Separate digital boards

Digital and analogue hardware needs to be carefully separated from each other. Even the smallest amount of RF interference is known to cause trouble for analogue amplifier stages.
Therefore, the digital and ARC boards are physically separated on their own PCBs and have their own linear power supply.

The digital coaxial, optical and USB-C inputs accept high-resolution sample rates up to 24bit and 192kHz and the HDMI eARC input allows your home theatre to be brought to life and properly invigorated by the powerful M5xi analogue amp stages.

Inputs & Connectivity

The M5xi features 4x RCA inputs line inputs. The built in MM & MC phono stage has received a significant upgrade compared to the M5si; delightful news for any phono stage enthusiast as in addition to the technical improvements, it now supports MC cartridges too.

For system flexibility, the M5xi includes a home theatre bypass input. The HT input bypasses the preamplifier stage entirely, allowing seamless integration with home theatre processors and enabling the M5xi to perform as a high-performance stereo power amplifier for your left and right speakers within a multichannel system.

Connectivity has also been expanded to meet the needs of modern audio systems. New optical, coaxial, and HDMI eARC inputs provide versatile digital connectivity, while a new USB-C input supports high-resolution audio up to 24-bit/192 kHz. For custom installation and system control, the M6xi now features an RS232 interface.

In addition, a new 5V/2A USB-A power output allows the amplifier to conveniently power modern external streamers, simplifying system setup and reducing the need for additional power supplies. This output has its own separate transformer winding and linear power supply stage, effectively also doubling as a power supply upgrade for your favourite streamer.

Digital integration is equally refined. The USB input features a carefully optimised digital circuitry layout, specifically designed to minimise high-frequency interference within the M5xi. This meticulous engineering protects the sensitive analogue signal path, ensuring the digital section never compromises the amplifier’s sonic purity.

For system expansion, the M6xi includes dedicated pre-out connections. The variable Pre-Out allows seamless integration with external power amplifiers for bi-amping configurations. It also provides a convenient connection for active subwoofers, enabling greater flexibility in building high-performance systems. The fixed Line Out connection is best suited to connect your favourite headphone amplifier.
