Musicians

Patricia Barber’s Modern Cool brought her mainstream success, propelled by her classic version of the Doors’ “Light My Fire.”

Touring for this album, Barber played selections from it during her four-night stand at The Jazz Standard in New York.

There she was heard by Bruce Lundvall of Blue Note Records, which led to a string of popular Barber recordings for both Premonition and Blue Note, worldwide touring and the unapologetic critical acclaim from which Barber never looked back.

Modern Cool quickly became an audiophile classic both through Jim Anderson’s stunningly-detailed, naturalistic recording, and the mastery of Barber’s writing and performance

In the latest Impex collaboration with Barber, this pristine VR900-D2-pressed 180-gram LP, newly re-mastered by Bernie Grundman using David Glasser’s original master, faithfully reproduces every dynamic nuance and tonal accuracy of the of the original recording without harshness or sibilance.

They then applied the Impex Treatment to the deluxe new package, updating the stylish original design and adding an exclusive heavy-stock booklet with complete lyrics and exclusive session photos from Barber photographer Valerie Booth.

Even if you already own a copy of this modern cool jazz classic, this new Impex release adds value and never-before-heard sonics worthy of your upgrade

What They Do

You live for this. The anticipation of pulling open the heavy-plastic outer sleeve. The sensation of removing the disc from its heavy-board, tip-on jacket. The heft of the 180-gram vinyl disc sliding into your hand. The satisfaction of the perfectly flat LP becoming one with the platter. The astonishment at the record’s silence surface. And then, that sound – the brilliant, vivid fidelity – and the euphoric emotion of being there at the creation: inside hallowed recording spaces such as Columbia’s 30th Street Studio, Capitol Studio A in Hollywood, or Abbey Road in London. From the moment the stylus hits the groove, you’re enveloped by amazing performances captured in extraordinary, life-like sound. Music with unprecedented transparency, immediacy and richness of tone. Pristine sound that comes as close to the original analog master tape as is humanly possible. Deep feelings abound as you experience the impeccable craftsmanship of an IMPEX RECORDS audio disc. This is the reward you’ve earned for a deep-seated love of music, your commitment to superior sound and the countless hours and prodigious capital you’ve invested in building a playback system that can transport you to your musical Nirvana.
